Mohndorf Armschlag is situated in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. It lies at an altitude of 750m and it is north of the so-called Danube-Valley “Wachau” between Ottenschlag and Zwettl. The arable land comprises about 8 hectares. In July the poppy fields are approximately two weeks in bloom. Waldviertler Graumohn is a violet, white or red flowering sort of poppy and its origin in the Waldviertel is protected by the EU. The poppy-seeds are light grey with a delicate and light flavour. Moreover poppy is high in potassium and calcium which are good for your health. Before poppy can be used for preparing sweet dishes it is necessary to grind down the poppy seeds. This is done with special poppy mills. We also sell ground poppy seeds which you can deep-freeze. So they are available for cooking at any time. If you would like to visit Mohndorf Armschlag, we recommend a guidance along the “poppy path”, a walk through the village along six showcases which contain stories, information and special features concerning poppy. You will also come across special “poppy gardens” which offer a great variety of poppy and specially marked farmhouses where various products of poppy are sold. During summer a shop offers a choice of our products and it provides information about cultivation of poppy. Landlord Neuwiesinger offers his guests a great variety of specialities. The menu contains for example poppy seed cake, poppy seed noodles, zander covered with poppy. The original poppy seed cake by Neuwiesinger is sold to everywhere in the world. Additionally you can buy some special products made of poppy, such as cosmetics, chocolate and honey. On March 17th local people celebrate the “day of the poppy”. In July the blooming poppy fields are a feast for the eyes. The flowering time of each poppy seed however, lasts for only one day. During that time water colourists enjoy painting wonderful pictures in the poppy fields. In August our guests may take part in walking tours. There are a lot of footpaths where hikers can walk during the whole year. Our harvest festival is celebrated every third Sunday in September – and of course it deals with poppy. There are market stalls where freshly harvested “Waldviertler Graumohn” (=grey poppy), sweet dishes, poppy oil and schnapps as well as small gifts are offered. Waldviertler folk music and traditions are presented. We gladly
organize guided tours for groups. Guided tours can be booked at Neuwiesinger`s Inn. Closing days: Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon during the season, Monday and Tuesday out of season.
